OPEN CALL: women, trans- or interpersons of colour with interest in choreography and movement wanted!

Following her successful premier at Münchner Kammerspiele last fall, director Anta Helena Recke is back with her latest work DIE KRÄNKUNGEN DER MENSCHHEIT at Kampnagel. Part of the play will be an on-stage group choreography. For three perfromances, we are looking for women and girls, trans and inter-persons of colour aged 16 or older.

Throughout rehearsals, you will learn a simple choreography being part of a group. You don’t need any prior knowledge or training but need to be able to focus and memorise the steps and be patient as we are working with a large group. You should enjoy being on stage and have a passion for movement and the performing arts!

Applications from women/trans/inter persons with Muslim faith or cultural background are particularly encouraged! As are applications from women/trans/inter persons of all ages, especially adolescents and those 60 or older.

Working language is German. If needed, we can translate to English, French and Italian and, to a lesser degree, Spanish, Portuguese and Wolof.

Anta Helena Recke is a German-Senegalese director. Her production MITTELREICH was invited to last year’s Theatertreffen in Berlin. This year, it received the International Theatre Institute (ITI) award. Her work – concept art as theatre production – is focused on marking and ensuring non-repetition of normativity by creating new spaces of experience for her audience. In cooperation with Maxi Menja Lehmann and Anna Froehlicher, Recke continues her work with DIE KRÄNKUNGEN DER MENSCHHEIT by developing new, almost meditative spaces of experience.

The production HUMANITY AND ITS DISCONTENTS creates an illustrative cycle. Sequentially, each image is superimposed on the other, creating a hybrid space between museum, zoo and laboratory: A horde of apes populates the stage, ultimately congregating around a man in a white lab coat for feeding, as usual; A small group of museum visitors undertakes an expedition to a museum in a fictitious European capital; A large group of people paints patterns into the space. The play leads us to those fragile moments when our understanding of the world is superseded. The play refers to a text by the same name by Siegmund Freud. Freud writes that throughout history, humanity experienced three major humiliations: earth is not the centre of the universe, man descends from apes, and finally, man is not master of its own volition. The production plays on these humiliations to answer the question: what do we mean by „humanity“? HUMANITY AND ITS DISCONTENTS is about marking, categorising and understanding. It is a play about a society that is overtaken by its own past.
