Theater, Performance und Tanz in Hamburg - Kampnagel

Welcome!
Kampnagel, like many institutions, is currently in a process of transition: we’re working on making Kampnagel more accessible in front of, on, and behind the stage. In order to do that, we’re currently testing out new formats.
That’s where you come in: do you have an idea or a suggestion for improvement that came to you during your visit or are there any barriers that have been keeping you from coming to Kampnagel so far? „Ask, listen, learn, act“ is the motto we go by in this process, and we’re happy about any and every kind of feedback. Feel free to contact us via phone at +49 40 270 949 19 or via email at Barrierefreiheit@kampnagel.de!

PROGRAMME

Here, you’ll find an overview of all the formats and the correspondent shows currently running. Just like the programme, this page is updated every other month.

Piktogramm durchgestrichenes Auge  FOR BLIND AND PARTIALLY SIGHTED VISITORS

Piktogramm zwei Sprechblasen  Stage Tours
Stage tours give visitors a chance to go on stage roughly an hour before the performance starts. The scenery and costumes can be touched and will be described along with other visual elements, such as video and lights. Afterwards, there will be an introduction to the piece, usually moderated by a member of the Kampnagel team along with a person that works in the show, for example a technician or a dramaturg. You’ll have the chance to ask questions if you like.
>Fr 13.03. 18:00: Meine Damen und Herren: Die Stadt bin ich
Registration and questions: +49 04 270 949 19 / barrierefreiheit@kampnagel.de

Piktogramm AD  Audio Described Performances
There will typically be one or two audio described performances per season. That means that visual elements such as the set, costumes, action sequences, body language and facial expressions are described live and through headphones.

Piktogramm Person mit Uhr  Early Boarding
Early Boarding allows visitors to enter the performance space early. Anyone can use the early boarding if they profit from being able to perceive the space and get used to it with only a few other people present and calmly find a space that suits their needs. You will find the meeting point in front of the performance space where seating will also be supplied. The Early Boarding will also be announced through the speakers in the foyer and the space outside of Kampnagel. We’re currently still testing how it all works best!

>We 22.04 through Sa 25.04. Hofmann / Van Bebber / Rodrigo / Huber: All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace

Piktogramm RP  Relaxed Performances
Relaxed Performances try to create a space that best meets the needs of everyone present as opposed to imposing a conventional set of “theatre rules” on the audience. Anyone benefitting from a more relaxed atmosphere might feel more comfortable here! Movement and sounds in the audience are explicitly allowed and the shows do without intense sensory input such as strobe lights or unexpected loud noises. Visitors can leave the room and return at any moment if they wish to take a break. There will be bean bags and mattresses aside from the regular seating. You can borrow hearing protection headphones at the wardrobe for all events, Relaxed or not!
>Sa 22.02. Fusion Dance Battle (event is very loud, ear protection will be provided)
>We 11.03. through Sa 14.03. Meine Damen und Herren: Die Stadt bin ich
>Sa 14.03. 17:00: Autonomie, Arbeitsstrukturen und Ästhetiken im Theater mit Menschen mit Behinderung. Talk

Trigger Warnings and Other Additional Information
Our announcement texts rarely give detailed information on what happens on stage, because many of our visitors like to be surprised there. We’re very aware though that certain topics, images, sounds and effects can be difficult for visitors, especially when not announced. In order to make sure everyone can enjoy their visit, you can therefore ask about all that is relevant for you to know before you come see a show. Please get in touch with Claire Diraison via phone, +49 40 270 949 19 or email, Claire.Diraison@Kampnagel.de. She will then ask the production team directly and get back to you. Since that may take a little time, we kindly ask you to get in touch a few days ahead of your visit whenever possible.

You’ll find detailed information on how to get to us here.

This map shows all the relevant buildings and entries as well as information on parking and the closest bike station and bus stop. You’ll also find the information desk highlighted.

We’re always happy to welcome you in person and familiarise you with the venue. Please contact Claire Diraison via phone, +49 40 270 949 19 or email, Claire.Diraison@Kampnagel.de, ideally two days ahead of you visit.

Piktogramm Rollstuhlfahrer'in  Wheelchair Accessibility
The venue is almost entirely at ground level. All the main performance spaces (K1, K2, K3, K4, K6, P1 and kmh) as well as the foyer, box office and the restaurant Peacetanbul are wheelchair accessible. If that is ever not true because of different seating for individual events, that will be noted specifically in the programme as well as on the event’s page on this homepage. Unfortunately, the rehearsal spaces as well as kX are currently only accessible via stairs. There’s also no paved access to Migrantpolitan, making it not wheelchair accessible either.
The programme on this page can be filtered for wheelchair accessible events. We will supply wheelchair seats as necessary. We’re very sorry that as of now, tickets for those seats cannot be purchased online. Please let the box office staff know that you’ll need a wheelchair seat upon buying your ticket. You can contact them via phone, +49 40 270 949 49 or email, Ticketing@kampnagel.de.
Between the main venue and the office building (Jarrestraße 20), there are two disabled parking spots. Please come through the driveway in Jarrestraße 20, and keep to the left. From these parking spots, the main entrance is at a paved, ground level 100 m distance.
You can also find more detailed information in German here.

Piktogramm durchgestrichenes Auge  Accessibility for Blind and Partially Sighted Visitors
You can get to the main entrance via either stairs or a ramp. The stairs are illuminated brightly and free of glare. The steps are marked in white on the grey pavement. There’s no railing.
There are no rotating doors in the entire venue. All glass doors are clearly marked except for the entry to the restaurant Peacetanbul. Doors and doorframes other than the toilet doors are in high contrast to their surroundings. The doors leading to the performance venues will be opened by staff members. There are movable seating facilities in the foyer that are usually all located in the middle of the room or pushed against the walls. The walls cannot be used to guide oneself through foyer and performance venues. The box office counter is brightly illuminated, the writing on their display is small. Unfortunately, there’s currently no guiding system in the venue or to the venue from public transport. You’ll find detailed directions here xx. Detailed information on the building accessibility can also be found in German here.
We welcome service dogs. Please let the box office staff know that you’ll bring your service dog when you buy your ticket so we can find suitable seating. You can reach them via phone, +49 40 270 949 49 or email, Ticketing@kampnagel.de.

Accessibility for D/deaf and Hard of Hearing Visitors
There’s an inductive loop in both K6 and K2. It can be used on all seats in K2 and between the first and 16th row in K6. We have learned that in K6, the signal is weak on seat 1 and 34 of row 1 and on seats 1-3 of row 16. In K2, there's a weak signal on seat 1 and 25 of row 1 and in row 14.
Thank you Humantechnik for your support!
All performances that use the inductive loop are listed here!
You can find further information on the building accessibility in German here.

Quiet Space
Unfortunately, we currently don’t have a designated quiet space. We find the seating area under the gallery in foyer to generally be relatively quiet and peaceful. You can always borrow noise protection headphones at the wardrobe!

Toilets
The wheelchair accessible toilet is located next to the other toilets between P1 and KMH. Our other toilets currently have binary gendering; we’re working on changing that.

Reductions
Visitors with a “Schwerbehindertenausweis” (disabled person’s pass) get a 50 % reduction on tickets. If their pass carries the marker “B”, an accompanying person will receive the same reduction. We’re sorry you’re currently not able to buy tickets with this reduction online, but only in person at the box office, via phone, +49 40 270 949 49 or email, Ticketing@Kampnagel.de.

Positioning ourselves

Kampnagel carries a reputation of being ‘diverse’ and engaged in social justice issues. We wish to use that position to try and find and tackle all the areas that still leave room for improvement through self-critical analysis and exchange with visitors, artists and all those working in culture. In practice, that means that we consistently question routine processes and attempt to find new ways not only for, but with those who will use them. Kampnagel also wishes to weigh in on questions of cultural politics and to serve as a platform for activism.

Hiring Policy
We explicitly encourage disabled people, people of all nationalities, queer people, people of color and black people to apply. Having the diversity of society represented in a space like Kampnagel is important to us. We also promote equality of all genders and reconsilability of family life and work.

Networks and Cooperations
Developing ourselves to us also means connecting with experts locally and globally. We’re therefore in consistent exchange with visitors and artist with various disabilities and with the local associations in Hamburg. We’re also a part of the project KULTUR PLUS. In 2019, Kampnagel along with many theatre makers and institutions founded the nationwide network “aesthetics off access” (working title). In a European context, Kampnagel is in touch with six partners as part of the network Europe Beyond Access.

Reisen für Alle (Travel for all)
The accessibility of Kampnagel has been evaluated by Deutsches Seminar für Tourismus / Reisen für Alle in both 2015 and 2019. It has been described as accessible for people with impaired mobility and partially accessible for wheelchair users. You can find the German reports here:

Senator-Neumann-Preis
In 2018, Kampnagel received the Senator-Neumann-Preis.

Questions and Suggestions
If you have any further questions or suggestions on the issue of accessibility, please feel free to get in touch! We’re continuously working on improving the accessibility of Kampnagel. Please contact Claire Diraison, via phone, +49 40 270 949 19 or email, Claire.Diraison@Kampnagel.de.
