Reclaiming History

Language creates reality, and it is perhaps no coincidence that “history” (derived form the Greek hɪsˈtoːʀi̯ ə) sounds a lot like “his story”, despite their different etymologies. After all, western history has been and mostly continues to be written by (white) men for (white) men – with the aim of commemorating other (white) men. The fact that, in a field still dominated by white, male academics, the same group are the beneficiaries, object and audience of this research continually acts to stabilise patriarchal society. As is the case for every other academic discipline with its roots in the west, history claims to be neutral and based on facts, eliding that the dominant accounts given, the ones that condition our understanding of the present and the future, are the accounts of the powerful. Precisely the claim to objectivity is what makes this so dangerous. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that the enforcement of certain versions of history has enabled the age-old oppression of women, the exploitation of entire continents and the institution of slavery, and continues to nourish racism in the present. The artists and theorists of RECLAIMING HISTORY reveal how history has been colonised, present unheard narratives, and practise alternative cultures of remembrance and herstory telling. The aim is a present and a future in which those who speak and are heard are those who until now have been on the outside of history.
