Georgian folk dance meets club culture: a clever dance spectacle with resistance potential.

The ovation was long and furious when the French media art collective (LA)HORDE energized the past Summer Festival with the jumpstyle storm TO DA BONE. Now the trio returns for the opening of the festival with a world premiere for the grand stage and devotes themselves to the equally powerful Georgian folk dance. This very physical dance with elements from martial arts, ballet, jumps and fast turns on the knees, is brilliantly performed by the young Georgian Iveroni Group, which was founded by former dancers from the Georgian National Ballet. In the communist era, the dance was regarded as a medium of peaceful resistance to the cultural hegemony of the Soviet Union. Today it is performed at weddings and has become the propagandistic figurehead of a young nation with commercial tours all over the world. (LA)HORDE and the dancers get to the bottom of the resistant potential of this traditional dance with 1,500 years of history – and place it in the context of the latest example of danced resistance in Georgia: After a raid on the title-giving Club Bassiani, in spring 2018 tens of thousands of young people demonstrated in front of the parliament building in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, dancing to loud techno music to defend their rights. Broadcast live in the social media, the protest triggered a wave of solidarity throughout Europe following the slogan "We dance toghether, we fight toghether". MARRY ME IN BASSIANI is a virtuous and spectacular evening about the resistance, solidarity and energetic power of bodies that dance together.
