The research, performance and exhibition project THAT, AROUND WHICH THE UNIVERSE REVOLVES brings visual artists, city planners, photographers, performers and theoreticians together in order to explore the interrelationship between space and time, memory, architecture and city planning. In Hamburg, the project will start with the life and work of one of the most vibrant and brave anti-colonial activists of the Hanseatic city: Mpundu Akwa from Cameroon lived in Hamburg at the beginning of the 20th century, where he opposed the German Empire’s colonial policies in publications and the political sphere. In a three-day program at Kampnagel and in public space, THAT, AROUND WHICH THE UNIVERSE REVOLVES combines interdisciplinary contributions in an open dramaturgy between exhibition spaces, performance interventions and debates.

“What if we approached Hamburg's colonial history choreographically, by way of Henri Lefebvres concept of a rhythmanalysis that would introduce a play of encounter, drawing lines between past and present, between buildings, monuments, stories and the everyday movement of people through them?” (Savvy Contemporary)
The project is funded by the TURN fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Das Programm auf Kampnagel ist gefördert im Rahmen des Bündnisses internationaler Produktionshäuser von der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien.
