This season opener asks whether tragedy has the potential to be a model for our times. What does the current migration have in common with classic Greek tragedy? Actually nothing, and yet we view »the refugee tragedy« with the same perspective as we did Medea: pitifully. International drama queens, protagonists of real life as well as theater, dance and performance artists create performative strategies of the tragic – as a passionate manifesto for dancing without hang ups, as fake Antigones with real emotions or as surrealist, disturbing stormers of the stage who discover their own Electra. TRAGEDY NOW! argues for a theater of empathetic circumstances. A parallel discussion program uses impulse presentations, lecture performances, a music platform and a talk show to further splinter the tragedy in a post-colonial kaleidoscope: theater scholars, artists, activists and migrants take TRAGEDY NOW! at its word and expand cultural comfort zones. Be ready to get emotional, be ready to get real.
