For three weeks, Kampnagel International Summer Festival celebrates the opening of the German Museum for Black Entertainment and Black Music. Founded by Joana Tischkau, Anta Helena Recke, Elisabeth Hampe and Frieder Blume it is the leading museum for Black German culture and pop history, with an extensive collection of records, magazines, autographs and memorabilia. Curated by Hamburg director Mable Preach and members of the Formation**Now collective, the museum sheds light on Black artists such as Tic Tac Toe, Roberto Blanco and Nadja Abd el Farrag, and the conditions of their careers in a white-dominated entertainment industry. With a focus on Hamburg based artists, a supporting program of concerts, lectures, guided tours, panels and performances forms a dialogue with stars from the past and today, creating a lively space of critical exchange and memory for Black artistic work

Thu-11.08 / 16:00 Admission, 19:00 Opening Speech

From 7pm Priscilla Owosekun-Wilms, Chairwoman of the Hamburg-Nord District Assembly will hold the opening speech of the German Museum for Black Entertainment and Black Music. Afterwards, Nebou N'Diaye will talk to pioneers of Hamburg hip hop and reggae, Miss Leema, DJ Vito and Jamaica Papa Curvin, about their careers and anecdotes from the history of the genres. Afterwards DJ Vito will play some tunes. Guided tours are possible between admission and the live program, depending on capacity.

At the end of the 90s, Nana Darkman shaped the sound of the German rap & RnB scene with his hit songs "Darkman" and "Lonely" and stayed at the top of the charts for several weeks. He released two studio albums through the label Booya Records in 1997 and 1998 and in the following years through his own label Darkman Records. In this interview, the rapper and DJ looks back on his music career.

The history of Black History Month began in the USA in the early 20th century . In Hamburg, this practice of remembering and celebrating Black history every year throughout a whole month was first taken up in the mid-90s. Sista Oloruntoyin, Joanne Bell and Nigel Asher talk about the origins and development of a series of events that has become an integral part of Hamburg's art and cultural scene.

From Billy Mo to Fasia Jansen to TicTacToe, Black people have been influencing the German music industry for over a hundred years, from Schlager to Rap Music. FORMATION NOW** Allstars interpret songs by Hamburg pioneers and remind us of the complexity of black musical understanding with their own creations.
