The door to Hell opens in Hamburg: Botswana’s death-metal cowboys, Overthrust, encounter Cologne’s blackmetal monstrosity, Ultha.

The second part of Summer Festival’s IN/AUDIBLE SOUND series, which disproves clichés about »African music« is dedicated to evil: Overthrust’s visit marks the first time that the figurehead of the stylish and musically advanced Botswana metal scene comes to Europe, showing that subjects like death, purgatory and torture aren’t just the purview of white metal musicians with long hair and split ends. Their outfits are heavily influenced by recently deceased rock ‘n’ roll antipope Lemmy, but they play brutal death metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse. The band also organizes the Overthrust Winter Mania Fest every year, the most important event in the small African metal scene and a charity event that collects money for, for example, the local AIDS association.
On this night, Cologne band Ultha answers the question of what lies between despair and depression, and shows how black metal – a genre that is otherwise more frequently associated with Scandinavia – can be rethought, or rather, played, in new ways. The band’s members have approximately 100 years of experience in various metal, jazz, grind and hardcore bands, and have now given the USA a jolt with their debut album, »Pain Cleanses Every Doubt.«
