In a techno-shamanistic ritual, Brazilian artist Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha makes the threatened Rio Xingu river in the Amazon regions speak.

For eight years, artist, actress and director Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha has been working on an artistic research project on the threatened river landscapes in Brazil. She regularly travels to the Amazon region and networks with female resistance fighters throughout the country. In ALTAMIRA 2042 she focuses on a tributary of the Amazon river, the Rio Xingu, and the Belo Monte dam, which massively threatens the habitats and rainforest areas on this rivers banks.

As master of ceremonies in a techno-shamanistic ritual, Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha presents documentary material of the river herself, the indigenous inhabitants of its banks and their enchanted beings. The voices of the water, the animals, the plants, the residents, the displaced and the deceased, but also the sounds of the machines and the noise of destruction come out of colorful LED speakers. A polyphonic mythological-spiritual narrative unfolds about the river as a carrier of history, the significance for the biotope and the environment – and about the possibilities of resistance and a different future in the speculative year 2042.
