Like the birds! With the premiere of his dynamic flock-choreography, famed French choreographer Olivier Dubois returns to Hamburg.
The last time Olivier Dubois visited Kampnagel, he was still the enfant terrible of the French dance scene. In 2013, he opened the festival with his hypnotic (and naked) marching-choreography TRAGÉDIE, which created a furor far beyond Hamburg and is still successfully travelling around the world. These days, Dubois is considered to be one of the great French figures in the dance world – as is Rachid Ouramdane – and he leads one of France’s renowned centers for choreography: the Ballet du Nord. This makes it all the more exciting that Dubois will present his continuation of TRAGÉDIE to the world in Hamburg.
With AUGURI Dubois has taken on no less of a task than examining the fate of humanity through dance. Similar to ornithomancy, through which omens are foretold from the observed flight of birds, Dubois turns the stage into an oracle of humanity. He has his 22 dancers jump, run and chase each other across the stage to energetic, symphonic music by François Caffenne. This produces large, ominous images, part utopia and part warning, in which a panorama of human existence unfolds.
