Indian choreographer Mandeep Raikhy is making his Kampnagel debut with his company from New Delhi, as part of the 6th Hamburg India Week. Raikhy’s ensemble piece, A MALE ANT HAS STRAIGHT ANTENNAE examines the nature of the male body, which, within the wider understanding of masculinity, can sway between hyper-masculine and effeminate. Six men and a woman create duets, dancing synchronised, abstract and every day movements and comparing body parts as a suggestion of that clichéd male search for competition. Raikhy creates open, humourous and tender situations, which move between theatre and dance. They captivate us through clear settings but also allow the audience to make their own connections between the dance and the theme. Mandeep Raikhy focuses his attention on presentations of masculinity through a filter of stereotypes around sport, relationships, sexuality and contact. Through this he touches on subjects that are taboo – and not just in the Indian culture.
