Music as a spatial experience: Holly Herndon composes an exhibit in the Kunstverein in Hamburg.

In cooperation with the Kunstverein in Hamburg and the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe, the Summerfestival is exhibiting a new solo work by artist Holly Herndon. One of the most forward-thinking musicians of the moment, the American composer and doctoral candidate from Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics uses computers to expand our idea of contemporary pop. Herndon, who is also presenting her new album, “Platform,” in a concert at the festival, is preparing a composition commissioned for the Klangdom (sound dome), a project developed by the ZKM. The latter consists of 24 speakers distributed around a room that can be played using control software, turning sound itself into a sculptural spatial experience. In the Klangdom, Herndon’s compositional principle – to sample her everyday and digital surroundings, and incorporate collaborators ranging from radical Dutch design studio Metahaven to word sculpture Spencer Longo and ASMR artist Claire Tolan – are turned into a unique spatial and acoustic experience.

The opening takes place on 05.08. at 17:00.

The ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe additionally presents a concert with works by Ludger Brümmer, Orestis Karamnlis, Valerio Murat, Marc Richter and Alexander Schubert on August 22.

Co-Production of International Summerfestival Kampnagel, Hamburg together with Kunstverein in Hamburg and Institute for music and Musik and acoustics of ZKM | Karlsruhe. With support of Bert-Kaempfert-Stiftung and Antje Landshoff-Ellermann.
